PCOS
PCOS is when the ovaries are covered in many small cysts, the menstrual cycle is irregular and long and there can be the presence of acne and/or excessive hair growth on the body. Blood tests reveal hormone imbalance (namely of testosterone and LH) and the ovaries will appear swollen on a trans-vaginal scan. Commonly there will be no ovulation.
Many women have ovaries with polycystic appearance but do not manifest the full syndrome, experiencing slightly irregular menstrual cycles. Often these women do not have trouble conceiving, although it may take a little longer.
Weight adjustment can be very helpful as women with PCOS often stop ovulating when they are overweight.
We will work alongside your practitioner and suggest you see our fertility nurse Lynne Agar to help identify your fertile window, which can be difficult with PCOS. It will normally require a 3 month course of treatment, depending on the severity of the syndrome and how well you respond in the first 6 weeks. If you’re not having any periods (amenorrhoea) we anticipate it taking approximately 6 weeks for your cycle to resume.
